Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

This is Valerie VanBooven with the Senior Care Industry Netcast, where leaders with three or more years in the senior care industry share their advice. It’s six questions in nine minutes. So let’s get to it. In a few sentences, tell us who you are and what you do.

In a few sentences, tell us who you are and what you do.

Janice Goldmintz:

Sure. My name is Janice Goldmintz, I’m in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My company is called Talk About Aging and that’s exactly what I do is I talk about aging. So I do seminars on aging for older adults, their families, healthcare providers, and as well, I help families create, I’ll say plans for them to go ahead so that they can have the highest quality of life possible, no matter what.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

Very nice. And I took a look at your website, which we will also put with this video so everybody can check it out and you offer lots of different services. And it’s so nice to see that, especially when family caregivers are a little stressed out.

Janice Goldmintz:

A lot stressed out.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

Yeah, a lot stressed out. Absolutely. What is the best thing about serving aging adults?

Janice Goldmintz:

I really want to honor their legacy. These people have come to a point in their life where they deserve to have the rest of their life be as high quality as possible. So if there’s anything that I can do to make that happen, I’m game for it. That really is what motivates me to do what I do.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

And that’s awesome because I think you’re right. We need to listen to our aging adults and we need to help them get the services and whatever we can do to make their lives a quality life that’s really what they deserve.

Janice Goldmintz:

For sure.

What Are Your Thoughts About Online Marketing?

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

Absolutely. Okay. I’m going to switch gears for one second and talk about online marketing. We ask everybody this question. I hear from other senior service providers that marketing online can be challenging, which I agree it’s a little confusing, sometimes ever changing. What has been your experience or your thoughts, especially right now when Zoom tends to be our biggest ally in all of this.

Janice Goldmintz:

For sure. So what I really believe is, especially in these challenging times, COVID times, online marketing is the way to get your message out there. People are searching for a way that they can have you come to their living room and this is going to be it. And for those of us who may not be all of the… As familiar, this has been a huge learning curve in finding ways to make this work and get the message out there to more and more people. So I think it’s really an opportunity for everybody.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

It’s definitely a learning opportunity. And I do think that whether it’s COVID or the next thing that comes along, we’re probably going to find ourselves in this position again someday, or maybe for a long time, or maybe this is the way it’s going to be just having learned how to use Zoom or online marketing and to… Everybody would rather be together, that’s for sure.

Janice Goldmintz:

Of course.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

But learning these skills can help everybody now and into the future, so.

Janice Goldmintz:

For sure.

Are There Other Successful Leaders in the Senior Care Industry Who Have Made a Difference In Your Life?

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

Maybe even expand services because you can serve so many more people, even if they’re not in Toronto or wherever they are that you can still serve them well. Okay. Thank you for that. All right. So back to your wisdom about senior care, there are probably other successful leaders in the senior care industry like you that have been maybe a mentor, inspiration, or maybe organizations out there that you’ve really thought have done a good job. Is there anybody you’d like to talk about?

Janice Goldmintz:

There’s two of them. One is Dr. Bill Thomas who started the Eden Alternative and his whole philosophy of highest quality of care, no matter what stage you’re at to me is very, very inspiring. To make sure that the physical surroundings are conducive to the best quality of life, that people are in relationship with each other, that you have the most homelike possibility, no matter where you are, so for sure, he is a huge inspiration. And organizationally Monica Black at Simple Easy Transition helps people get from their home to the retirement residence or longterm care. And does it in such a way that you feel like she is a part of your family and it makes that transition so much easier, less stressful. And I think that that’s an important thing to have when those times can be challenging for you.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

Absolutely. Thank you for pointing both of those professionals out. I love the Eden Alternative, I hope that everybody knows about that or look set up a Googles it because it definitely is worth understanding. Absolutely.

Janice Goldmintz:

It is, yes.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

What piece of advice would you give to other senior care providers?

Janice Goldmintz:

So this is what I have learned is we have two ears and one mouth for a reason. And really it is all about listening. Those people and their families know what it is they’re looking for. And even somebody who has health challenges, they still have a way that they would like their life to be. And so listening to the clients, their families, and putting those circumstances together, sometimes we tend to think, oh, this is like, ABCD should be for this family. But if you listen, you can really customize it and make the best possible experience.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

Absolutely, right. You’re right, listening is… I get that a lot. I get that answer a lot. And I think that that is probably the number one answer we get there is please listen.

Janice Goldmintz:

Yes.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

And you’ll learn, you can ask the senior and they themselves will tell you what they would like to feel, see, know, understand what they like their life to be like.

Janice Goldmintz:

Right.

How Do You Like To Celebrate?

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

All right. So my last question is supposed to be my fun question, but some people say it’s the hardest one. When you have a win in life or business or with a client, and by win I mean they’re happy or something great happens, how do you like to celebrate?

Janice Goldmintz:

Well, for me, my go to thing is chocolate. I can use chocolate to celebrate anything and I’m a chocoholic. And so any excuse or opportunity I’m going to eat chocolate.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

All right.

Janice Goldmintz:

I’m also willing to share it. And on a more serious note, I really think that having colleagues and other people, family members, when it’s a personal thing, gathering together, celebrating together, I think that’s what really makes the best celebrations for me.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

I totally agree with you. And that’s the first time someone said chocolate. We’ve had martinis. We’ve had tequila. We’ve had a lot of answers, but chocolate is probably my favorite.

Janice Goldmintz:

It’s mine.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

[inaudible 00:07:27] have a lot of it.

Janice Goldmintz:

It’s mine.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

So you hit the number one answer as far as I’m concerned, chocolate and getting together with family and friends and colleagues. Absolutely.

Janice Goldmintz:

For sure.

Valerie VanBooven RN  BSN:

Very good. Thank you so much for being on the show and for telling us about what you do and sharing your wisdom with us. And you did a great job. So thank you so much. Thank you.

Janice Goldmintz:

Thank you. It’s my pleasure.
