Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

This is Valerie VanBooven with the Senior Care Industry Net Cast for leaders where three or more years in the senior care industry share their advice. It’s six questions in nine minutes so let’s get to it. In a few sentences, tell us who you are and what you do.

Adriana Gavozdea:

Hi, I’m Adriana Gavozdea and I’m with Laria Care Finder. We’re a nationwide locator for adult foster care homes. I’m also a placement agent at Laria Care Advisors in Portland, Oregon. We help seniors find the right fit in a care home and we are also doing real estate for care homes.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

I saw that, that is really neat. I really love your website. We’re going to put your website with your video so people can go see what you have to offer and all the different things you do. It’s great and it’s something I haven’t seen before so you’re doing great, you’re doing a great job.

Adriana Gavozdea:

Thank you.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

People, I think, don’t understand the value of a small care home. Some of them are large, some of them are small, but it’s really a neat concept and I think more people would be very interested in seeing what you’re doing.

Adriana Gavozdea:

Thank you.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

What is the best thing about serving aging adults?

Adriana Gavozdea:

Oh man, that is such a long topic because it’s just … I don’t know, for me it’s … So I started as a caregiver 10 years ago and I am still doing caregiving. My mother owns a care home and we work together every single day. For me, it’s just amazing to go in and be able to laugh with them and joke and listen to their stories, and just help in those little daily tasks that we take for granted. For us, it’s so easy to do and we’re so used to do certain things in life but for them it’s impossible so being able to do that for someone, for me it’s huge.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

Yeah. I think that … And the fact that you still work in the business and you’re doing all this other internet stuff and helping with placement is really nice. You have firsthand experience which helps you … People should know that you understand exactly what they’re doing and what they’re going through so that’s awesome. Okay, let’s switch gears just a little bit. I hear from other senior service providers that marketing online can be challenging, a little confusing, and always is changing, so what has been your experience or what are your thoughts?

Adriana Gavozdea:

It is actually, we do have that issue. When we started this business, when I started this business, I did not take that in consideration, I did not think about it, then I kind of clashed into it. I do have that in the placement agency part, branch, but the only thing I can do is reach out more over the phone or show up in person and try to help the people. The biggest clash we had was actually with the care home providers which are listing their vacancies on our website. A certain generation of care providers, after a certain age, have a very hard time to come online and market and do their advertisements so what we put together is, we allow them to email us simply or just call us and send us a picture. We stay on the phone with them and we just take their information and create the profiles for them so they can actually be out there and market for themselves and just be known and seen. We’re thinking all the avenues, email, phone calls, anything that’s easier.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

You’re right, it is a challenge. For those folks, I am almost 50 and I did not grow up with the internet and so for those of us who are a little older and this isn’t the business that we’re in, it is a challenge, even email can be a challenge so …

Adriana Gavozdea:

Oh yeah.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

I totally understand. It’s nice that you’re helping everybody. Wherever they are, that’s where you’ll go to help them, that’s nice. Okay. I would imagine that there are other successful leaders in the senior care industry like yourself that you might want to acknowledge; maybe we give a shout out to organizations, people. Who has made an impact on your life?

Adriana Gavozdea:

Well, I am working very closely with Alyssa Elting McGuire from Oregon Care Home Consulting and with Tracy Deanny from Oregon Care Home Consulting. They’re actually doing training for new care providers and they’re helping new care providers in the licensing process so they don’t make expensive mistakes, which it’s a business and it costs a lot so they’re there to consult everybody and they’re amazing. Also, I work very closely with a dear friend of mine, Bill Cohen, from Cohen Caregiving Support. He is supporting caregivers and does support groups for caregivers as far as caring for their loved ones.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

Very nice. Thanks for giving a shout out, people love it when they watch someone they know and they care about and they get a shout out, they just love that. We love knowing all of the folks that make your life easier so that’s awesome.

Adriana Gavozdea:

They’re amazing.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

Okay. What piece of advice would you give to other senior care providers?

Adriana Gavozdea:

Smile, always smile. You never know whose day is going to be better with your smile. People go through things. People don’t talk, people don’t shout out, and just smile. Listen, listen to their stories. All the seniors have such amazing and great stories, it’s wonderful to just sit down and listen for a minute. Sometimes we just pass by, we’re busy with our lives or our jobs and we’re like, “Oh, I’ll get to that,” but just sit down and smile, make someone’s day better.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

Yeah, absolutely. A smile goes a long way, that’s for sure. Okay. This is our fun question. When you have a win in life or in business or with family, how do you celebrate?

Adriana Gavozdea:

Well, I am very blessed and lucky to have amazing family and friends around me and every time I have a success or a fall they’re there. We usually go out and celebrate. Now, with this situation, we don’t really but we Zoom a lot these days. I actually love, love, love to be in the backyard by my fireplace with a glass of wine.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

I agree, that is a nice place to just relax. Relaxing is the best form of celebration, that’s for sure.

Adriana Gavozdea:

Yeah, just take it all in.

Valerie VanBooven RN BSN:

That’s right, absolutely. Well, Adriana, thank you so much for being on the show, for giving us your wisdom, sharing that with us, and for sharing Lariacarefinder.com with us. We’ll make sure other people know how to access that web site and how to get ahold of you if they run, manage, or are interested in care homes. They can learn a lot from your website so I appreciate you being on the show.

Adriana Gavozdea:

Thank you so much, Valerie, this was so much fun. Thank you.
